Onsite composting We helped to reduce landfill at the University of the Sunshine Coast by up to 70% by implementing OSCA composting technology. OSCA is an automated, energy-efficient, on-site 'waste-to-compost' system, which can convert up to one tonne of organic waste each week into compost that meets Australian industry standards. The system is silent and odourless, so there is no disruption to business.

Waste audit and desktop recycling program We introduced a desktop recycling program at James Cook University in Townsville, which involved conducting a preliminary waste audit to identify the types of waste being generated. Miniature bins were used to replace larger waste bins under desks, and waste stations containing large bins were set up in central locations. By providing miniature bins we aimed to reduce the amount of waste being generated for landfill. The waste stations encouraged exercise, requiring people to get up from their desk to go and dispose of waste correctly according to type (i.e. compostable, paper and cardboard, landfill, recyclables).
